The Team was established in 2010 under the "Industry-Research Integration Model," comprising the Intelligent Transportation Research Center, Intelligent Electric Vehicle Research Center, and Low-altitude Intelligent Research Center. Its primary research focuses on AI-powered transportation safety management, comprehensive road network safety control in intelligent transportation systems, and safe operation of intelligent connected vehicles.

The institution has supported the establishment of key laboratories including the Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Intelligent Transportation, Hunan Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center, and Key Laboratory of Philosophy and Social Sciences under the Ministry of Education. It has jointly founded a series of industry-specific laboratories focusing on intrinsic safety in transportation, intelligent transportation operations, and transportation industry data, along with pilot testing bases for smart transportation systems. Additionally, it has incubated startups such as Intelligent Transportation Design Institute, NiuHu Technology Co., Ltd., Precision Intelligent Control Co., Ltd., and Zhilian Transportation Technology Co., Ltd.

The team comprises over 20 faculty members, including more than 10 national/provincial-level talents. It has been consistently ranked among high-impact scholars by prestigious institutions such as Clarivate Analytics, Elsevier, and Stanford University for multiple consecutive years, achieving global leadership in academic rankings within the field of road traffic safety. Professor Huang Hela serves as the editor-in-chief of the authoritative journal AAP. The team has led over 40 national-level projects, including key national R&D initiatives, and completed more than 300 scientific research and application projects. It holds over 100 authorized invention patents and has published more than 500 high-quality academic papers.
