Approved by the Department of Science and Technology of Hunan Province in August 2016, the Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Intelligent Transportation is established relying on the national Double First-Class discipline of Transportation Engineering at Central South University. It carries out high-level research focusing on AI-enabled transportation management, intelligent connected full-road network control, and intelligent connected vehicle operation and transportation-energy integration. The laboratory has achieved fruitful research results in related fields such as traffic safety management, traffic management and control based on big data and Internet +, safety evaluation of intelligent connected vehicles, and AI large models for intelligent connected transportation. It has become a research team with certain international and domestic popularity, and has established a sound industry-university-research cooperation foundation with Hunan provincial traffic management departments, governments of various cities and prefectures, leading enterprises in the transportation field, and research institutions in the automotive industry.

The team currently has more than 20 teachers, who have been continuously selected into the highly cited scholar lists of Clarivate Analytics, Elsevier, Stanford University and other institutions for many years. Its academic ranking in the field of road traffic safety is among the top in the world. The team has more than 10 national and provincial-level talents, presided over more than 40 national-level projects such as the National Key R&D Program, and more than 300 scientific and technological R&D and application projects, obtained more than 100 authorized invention patents, and published more than 500 high-level papers.

The laboratory has established three major research directions:

1. AI-Enabled Transportation Management;

(1) Intelligent Traffic Safety Engineering

(2) Intelligent Transportation Management and Services

(3) Intelligent Scheduling and Operation of Public Transportation

2. Intelligent Connected Full-Road Network Control;

(1) Active Traffic Control of Expressways

(2) Active Traffic Control of Urban Roads

(3) Intelligent Connection and Vehicle-Road-Cloud Integrated Control

(4) Intelligent Three-Dimensional Traffic Scheduling and Control

3. Operation Safety of Intelligent Connected Vehicles and Transportation-Energy Integration;

(1) Integration of Active and Passive Safety for New Energy Vehicles

(2) Safety Evaluation of Intelligent Connected Vehicles

(3) Operation and Management of Transportation-Energy Integration
