From May 25 to 26, the finals of the 19th National College Student Transportation Science and Technology Competition, organized by the China Communications and Transportation Association and the China Transportation Education Society, were held at Chang’an University. Students from Central South University (CSU) secured awards for three entries, including two first prizes and one third prize.

Among the first-prize-winning projects, the ‘Multimodal Generative AI Large Model for Traffic Safety,’ guided by instructors Zhou Hanchu and Huang Helai, achieved cross-modal information fusion and generation. It explored the development of autonomous traffic agents, providing new ideas for the intelligentization of integrated transportation systems. Another first-prize project, ‘A Dynamic Perception Multi-Scenario Environment Adaptive Noise Reduction System for High-Speed Rail,’ guided by instructor Xie Suchao, intelligently absorbs noise across different frequency bands, effectively reducing noise levels inside high-speed train cabins and along railway lines.

The project ‘Research on Ultrasonic Phased Array Full-Focus Detection Method for Seamless Rail Welds Based on Robotic Arms,’ guided by instructors Li Xiongbing and Chen Feng, visualizes and evaluates defects in seamless rail welds. This project represents a beneficial attempt at automated detection for seamless rail welds and was awarded a third prize.

It is reported that the National College Student Transportation Science and Technology Competition has become the largest college student scientific and technological innovation competition in China’s transportation sector in terms of participating universities, student involvement, and social impact. It represents the highest level of extracurricular scientific and technological competitions for college students in the national transportation field. This year’s competition, themed ‘Towards Chinese-style Modernization, Promoting World-Class Talent Cultivation,’ encouraged students to apply new technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and the Internet of Things to support the national strategies of building a strong transportation country and innovation-driven development. The competition attracted participation from 159 universities, including Southeast University, Tongji University, and Central South University, receiving a total of 1,186 entries.
