The symposium was jointly organized by Central South University and the Hunan Provincial Society of Traffic Engineering. Attendees included Hélai Huang, Dean of the School of Traffic and Transportation Engineering at Central South University; Marco Bassani from Politecnico di Torino, Italy; Mohamed Ahmed from the University of Cincinnati, USA; Md Mazharul Haque from Queensland University of Technology, Australia; Jinwoo Lee from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST); Tiantian Chen; Sunghoon Jang from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Oscar Oviedo Trespalacios from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands; Dong Zhang from Dalian University of Technology; and over a hundred representatives of faculty and students. The meeting was chaired by Jaeyoung Lee from Central South University.

Dean Hélai Huang delivered the opening speech and introduced Central South University and the School of Traffic and Transportation Engineering, covering their basic profiles, institutional history, and disciplinary development. He noted that the Transportation Engineering discipline, as a Double First-Class discipline within a Double First-Class university, possesses abundant teaching resources, solid educational platforms, and prominent disciplinary strengths. Furthermore, Dean Huang introduced the attendees to the general situation of the Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Intelligent Transportation and discussed the current state of urban intelligent transportation development in China, as well as frontier research on intelligent transportation systems for expressways.

Jinwoo Lee explored infrastructure planning issues for emerging transportation modes; Dong Zhang discussed ‘Whether China’s ’Transit Metropolis’ pilot projects have promoted public transit ridership’; Tiantian Chen introduced a hazard-based duration model to further explore quantifying the impact of work distraction on taxi drivers’ safety performance; Sunghoon Jang investigated the influence of scooter parking areas on preferences for shared electric scooters; Marco Bassani presented an innovative intelligent speed adaptation system based on available sight distance; Mazharul ‘Shimul’ Haque discussed methods for real-time crash risk assessment of transportation infrastructure by integrating econometric and artificial intelligence models; Mohamed Ahmed explored methods for assessing the safety and operational performance of connected vehicle technologies; Oscar Oviedo Trespalacios examined the value of human infrastructure in enhancing sustainable transportation.

Subsequently, Lvxiang Deng, Associate Editor of the journal Transportation Safety & Environment, introduced the journal’s basic information and called for active submissions from the participants.

During the symposium, faculty and student representatives from the School presented posters and oral reports based on their individual research topics. They engaged in in-depth academic exchanges and discussions with the attending experts and scholars, actively exploring future research directions and areas for improvement.
