The Frontier Science Center for Extreme Flow Dynamics and Power (FSC-EFDP)established in 2021 as a relatively independent research institution at the departmental level.FSC-EFDPwas founded by Central South University to innovate scientific research organizational models and develop disruptive technologies.
The Center aims to address major national and defense strategic needs, with a focus on R&D inliquid-gas phase-change dynamic technologies and related products. It is committed to becoming a key base for defense-oriented scientific and technological innovation, talent cultivation, and industrial incubation.
Building upon its foundation, the Center secured approval from the Ministry of Education in 2022 to establish the“Integrated Research Platform for Key Core Technologies in Phase-Change Dynamics.”Furthermore, in 2025, it was designated as a“Key Discipline Research Center”(coded) by the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Administration.
The Center’s team brings together leading expertise from multiple disciplines across the University, including transportation, materials, energy, and mechanical engineering. This forms a talented cohort distinguished by both professional competence and dedication.In recent years, the team has developed unique technologies and experimental setups for liquid-gas phase-change power generation and cooling. It achieved the world’s first cold-launch tests for task payloads across multiple mass scales. Related technologies have been applied to national key projects, including domestically built aircraft carriers. One proprietary C4 technology was transferred for 125 million RMB. The Center has also cultivated a group of high-level talents, including:
1 leading expert in a major national defense engineering program;
1 selected for the National“Ten Thousand Talents Program”(Young Top-notch Talent category);
2 recognized by the Science and Technology Commission of the Central Military Commission under the“Young Talent Support”initiative;
7 recognitions in Hunan Provincial“Three-Tip”Talent programs.
Additionally, 1 professional was exceptionally promoted to the rank of Associate Research Fellow.
The Center has established a comprehensive technical R&D system consisting of divisions such as the Overall Design Laboratory, the Structural Analysis and Design Laboratory, the Simulation Technology Application Laboratory, the Testing and Control Laboratory, and a Field Test Base.Concurrently, it has built a complete management system dedicated to serving national defense and military industry needs. This system includes functional departments like the Project Management Department, the Quality Management Department, the SecurityOffice, the Safety Management Department, and the General Administration Office. This framework has enabled the formation of an integrated talent and supplier ecosystem, which comprehensively covers the entire process and all critical elements—from design, materials, and manufacturing processes to quality assurance, inspection, assembly, and testing.
